Having been a salesman for the past 11 years...I've learned through Trial and error that sales comes down to 3 things:

Know, Like, Trust

Who do I know, like, and trust to recommend a product or service? Would you buy something from someone who you don't know like and trust?

Fortune 500 companies spend Billions to maintain, tweak, and grow their brands, so that the consumer will know, like, and trust them.

The beautiful thing about leveraging the internet is that you can compete in a niche, by getting your message to your target customer. And the beautiful thing is that you know who your customer is because YOU are your customer. You saw a hole in the market, an opportunity to fill a void.
