Essex County Muslim-Jewish Sisterhood Pray In Unity

The weekend service in South Orange, which fell during Hanukkah, was dedicated to "building bridges of understanding and unity."

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ — Members of the Essex County chapter of the Sisterhood of Salaam Shalom recently joined members of Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel in South Orange for a multi-generational Shabbat service.

During the December 15 service, the women offered a special prayer of unity. The service was also marked by a performance by The Pursuit of Harmony, the musical duo of Jewish-American singer/songwriter Michael Ochs and Palestinian-Muslim peace activist/songwriter, Alaa Alshaham.

According to a news release from the temple, the weekend, which fell during Hanukkah, was dedicated to “building bridges of understanding and unity.”

The temple stated:

“Sisterhood of Salaam Shalom was founded to bring together Jewish and Muslim women to create relationships that fight hate and prejudice.”
