NJ Cop Hospitalized After Hit-And-Run: Police

A New Jersey police officer suffered serious injuries after a car struck him and fled the area, prosecutors said.

Newark, NJ – A Newark police officer suffered serious injuries after a car struck him and fled the area on Sunday, authorities said.

According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, the officer - whose name is being withheld for security reasons – was attempting to issue a motor vehicle summons to a car at the intersection of Foundry Street and Roanoke Street around 3:40 a.m., when the vehicle struck him.

The car then fled the scene, prosecutors said.

The officer – a 37-year-old, 14-year veteran of the force – was transported to University Hospital where he was treated for “serious injuries,” prosecutors said.

He was in stable condition as of Sunday, authorities stated.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department, is conducting an investigation, authorities said.
