Fatality Reported At NJ Transit's South Orange Station

NJ Transit officials labeled the incident a "trespasser fatality."

A NJ Transit train struck and killed a person at the South Orange Train Station during the Monday evening rush hour, authorities stated.

“This afternoon around 5 p.m., an individual was tragically struck by a train at the South Orange Train Station,” Maplewood town officials stated. “NJ Transit is in the process of investigating this incident. We have been advised that the Morris & Essex line will be shut down to all rail traffic during the investigation.”

“Commuters leaving New York City are advised to check the New Jersey Transit website for contingency plans and are further advised to make alternate transportation arrangements to leave the city. This could include taking the PATH to Hoboken or Newark. New Jersey Transit may seek to arrange bus transportation from those destinations.”

NJ Transit officials sent an alert at 6:13 p.m. that M&E train #6653 (the 5:50pm from NYPS) would be up to 15 minutes late due to residual delays from a “trespasser fatality.”

NJ Transit officials stated at 6:50 p.m. that M&E Line service was restored in both directions with delays of up to 60 minutes.
