South Orange Police: Car Strikes, Kills Pedestrian On Sidewalk

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ — A woman driving a 2012 Nissan struck and killed a 65-year-old male pedestrian walking near the South Mountain Train Station in South Orange on Thursday, police say.

According to the South Orange Police Department, officers responded to the train station around 3:15 p.m. after receiving a report about a pedestrian-vehicle strike on West Montrose Avenue.

On arrival, officers determined that a 55-year-old woman driving a 2012 Nissan east on West Montrose Avenue apparently “exited the roadway at the crest of the hill” and struck William E. Owens, 65, of South Orange, who was walking on the sidewalk.

Emergency responders transported the victim to Rutgers Hospital in Newark with serious injuries; he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The driver of the Nissan remained at the scene. At this time, no charges have been filed against her, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office stated Friday.

The South Orange Police Department and the Essex County Prosecutor's Office are conducting an investigation into the incident.
