South Orange Police: Stop Hooking Turtles

Reports of fishing in the South Orange Duck Pond prompted officials to release reminders.

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - The South Orange Police Department says one adult and two children fishing in the South Orange Duck Pond also were seen hooking turtles, prompting them to issue reminders about local ordinances designed to protect wildlife.

In a statement on their Facebook page, the South Orange Police Department said they received reports of three individuals fishing in the South Orange Duck Pond and it poses a problem for the wildlife there.

"Although fishing may seem innocuous, they were also observed hooking turtles," Police said in their social media post. "South Orange's code prohibits fishing, trapping, hunting or otherwise harming any wildlife in our public places."

220-27 Protecting Of Wild Animals, Birds And Fish
No person shall within any park or recreational area:

A: Hunt, molest, harm, frighten, kill, trap, chase, tease, shoot or throw missiles at any animal or bird.
B: Remove or have in his possession the young of any wild animal or the eggs or nest of birds.
C: Fish for, seine, catch or take from the waters situated in any park or recreational area any fish of any type whatsoever.
