Village Apartments of the Jewish Federation Participates in South Orange Senior Citizen Forum
Town-Wide Event Brought Together Concerned Seniors, Professionals, Essex County and South Orange Officials to Discuss Issues that Affect Old

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J., October 29, 2014 – On Sunday, October 26, the South Orange Senior Citizen Advisory Committee, along with representatives of groups that service senior residents and government officials, gathered for the South Orange Senior Citizen Forum at the South Orange Performing Arts Center (SOPAC). The event included exhibitors and a town hall meeting at which seniors were given the floor to air their concerns about a variety of issues including parking, accessibility, street safety, transportation and emergency preparedness. Exhibiting at the event was Village Apartments of the Jewish Federation and the Charles Bierman Home, located at 110 Vose Avenue in South Orange, just a few blocks from SOPAC. Several residents of the senior living community are active members of the South Orange Senior Citizen Advisory Committee, and participated that day as well.
Representatives from the South Orange Police Department and the township’s elected Board of Trustees were there along with Essex County officials and professionals who interact with and work with the senior population; they all shared valuable information with attendees about services and programs available, and discussed the issues being raised.
Harold Colton-Max, the CEO of the Jewish Community Housing Corporation of Metropolitan New Jersey (JCHC) addressed the issue of affordable housing options for older adults in South Orange. In addition to Village Apartments, the JCHC owns and South Orange B’nai B’rith Federation House as well as Jewish Federation Plaza in West Orange and the Lester Senior Housing Community in Whippany. B’nai B’rith Federation House and Jewish Federation Plaza offer HUD subsidies for elderly or disabled residents who qualify.
