UPDATE: No Injuries After Tractor Trailer Carrying Acid Overturns On Rt. 78
Route 78 reopened Tuesday morning after being shut down overnight

SPRINGFIELD, NJ — An acid material spilled onto Route 78 after a tractor trailer overturned Monday evening, causing havoc and traffic issues into Tuesday morning.
The truck containing hazardous material overturned around 7:15 p.m. on Route 78 eastbound. The material was described as "some sort of acid," by Union County spokesman Sebastian D’Elia.
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and Union County Emergency Management were dispatched to the scene.

Both directions of the highway were shut down east and west at milepost 49.5 in Springfield. All of the eastbound traffic was diverted off of exit 45, NJ State Police Trooper Alejandro Goez said.
The driver of the truck was not reportedly injured. The cause of the accident is unknown at this time.

The highway was reopened at 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
