1,300 Summit Residents Still Without Power As Restoration Continues

City officials say additional utility crews are arriving as power restoration and storm cleanup continue across Summit.

SUMMIT, NJ — More than 1,300 Summit customers remained without electricity Sunday evening as crews continued working to restore power following the severe storms that swept through the area.

According to the city, utility provider JCP&L reported that 1,367 customers — about 15 percent of Summit households — were still without power as of Sunday evening.

JCP&L told city officials it expects to restore service to approximately 527 homes on Sunday and another 505 homes on Monday, while additional utility crews from out of state continue arriving to assist with restoration efforts.

The utility currently estimates that the remaining outages could be restored by Thursday, July 9, though officials said power could return sooner if the additional crews help speed up restoration efforts.

According to the city, JCP&L is prioritizing repairs that restore electricity to the largest number of customers first, meaning homes affected by smaller, isolated outages may take longer to have power restored.

As cleanup continues, the city's Department of Public Works is also removing downed trees throughout Summit. Officials warned residents not to approach or attempt to move trees or branches that are touching downed power lines, saying all downed wires should be treated as energized and dangerous.

To assist with cleanup efforts, the lower level of the city's Transfer Station will be open Monday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. so residents can dispose of tree branches, limbs and other storm-related yard debris. No other areas of the facility will be open during that time.

City officials are also reminding residents using portable generators to follow recommended safety precautions and to report storm-related issues through SeeClickFix. Emergencies, including downed power lines, should be reported by calling 911.

The city also said additional information about the rescheduling of Summit's canceled Fourth of July fireworks celebration will be announced as it becomes available, while updates on storm recovery and power restoration are expected in the coming days.
