Crews To Work On Downtown Summit Power Outages 'Into The Night'

After a small fire downtown, several blocks were still without power on Monday afternoon.

SUMMIT, NJ — After a small underground fire in downtown Summit late Sunday night, more than 300 customers lost power. Around 3:40 p.m. on Monday, the city advised, "JCP&L reports that 168 Summit customers remain impacted by the current power outage. Crews ... plan to work through the night until restoration is complete."

At 11:17 p.m. Sunday, the Summit Fire Department responded to a report of smoke coming from a sidewalk on Union Place in front of the UPS Store. On arrival, crews found smoke coming from a grate cover with visible fire inside an underground electrical vault.

Jersey Central Power and Light was notified and responded to cut power to allow the fire to be extinguished. Power to a large portion of the downtown was shut down so crews could isolate the burned portion and make electrical repairs, the city said.
