Summit Based Anesthesiologist Agreed To Surrender Medical License

The anesthesiologist, who was reprimanded for conduct related to treating family and friends, agreed to retire rather than face a hearing.

SUMMIT, NJ — A Summit-based anasthesiologist has agreed to surrender his New Jersey medical license and retire from practice to avoid a hearing on accusations related to rendering medical care to family and friends, according to a record filed by the state Board of Medical Examiners on Jan. 23.

The consent order, drawn up by the state Attorney General's Office, says the Board of Medical Examiners had received information that Neil Ross, M.D., allegedly "failed to maintain medical records and conduct appropriate physical examinations when he was treating his family and friends."

The order says that "he also failed to access the Prescription Monitoring Program to determine if these family and friends were receiving Controlled Dangerous Substances from other practitioners. Additionally, respondent failed to maintain medical malpractice insurance while treating his family and friends."

The document stated that since all parties wanted to resolve the matter without a hearing, Ross consented to give up his license to practice medicine and surgery in New Jersey "with such surrender deemed to be permanent retirement."

But according to the document, Ross is also officially reprimanded for "failing to maintain medical records, failing to check the PMP, failing to maintain medical malpractice insurance, and for the conduct set forth in detail above."

He also must abide by other common practices by those who are ordered to surrender their license or who agree to do so voluntarily. This means Ross consented to:

  • Stop accepting new patients as of the date of the document, Jan. 23.
  • Transfer patients in an orderly manner and make their records available.
  • Destroy his prescription blanks.
  • Not receive fees from other professionals, although he can collect past fees he is owed.
  • Refrain from "managing, overseeing, supervision or influencing the practice of medicine" in New Jersey.

Dr. Neil Ross is listed as working for a Summit based practice, with the same medical license number as on the document.

When reached this week, a practice representative said she would not comment on the disciplinary action, and also said "no comment" when asked if Ross is affiliated with the practice.
