Summit Cancels July 4 Celebration And Fireworks

SUMMIT, NJ — Summit's Fourth of July celebration, including the city's fireworks display, has been canceled following storm damage and ongoing power outages across the area.

City officials announced Saturday morning that the festivities would not move forward due to downed trees and wires, widespread outages and the possibility of additional storms later in the evening.

The cancellation affects all planned July 4 activities associated with the city's Independence Day celebration, including the fireworks show.

The announcement comes after strong storms moved through parts of Union County Friday night, bringing down trees and power lines and leaving some residents without electricity heading into the holiday.

Officials urged residents to remain cautious around damaged trees and downed wires as cleanup and restoration efforts continue throughout the area.

No information about a possible rain date or rescheduled celebration had been announced as of Saturday morning.
