Two Events Planned In Summit For Fallen Firefighters

SUMMIT, NJ —The Summit Fire Department is participating in two National Fallen Firefighter events to honor those who died in the line of duty in 2019.

As dusk turns to dark this Sunday, the Summit Fire Department will light its memorial bell in red to honor fallen firefighters. The memorial bell will remain lit until Oct. 4. Light the Night takes place from Sept. 27 to Oct. 4.

Oct. 4 at 10 a.m., the department will participate in Bells Across America, a national moment of remembrance to honor firefighters who died in the line of duty in 2019. Bells will ring from coast to coast to start the memorial observance.

“The Summit Fire Department is proud to join communities across the nation in paying tribute to fallen firefighters,” said Summit Fire Chief Eric Evers. “We are thankful for the religious and spiritual leaders in our community that will participate in a moment of remembrance to honor our brothers and sisters who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty in 2019.”

A brief ceremony will be held outside Summit Fire Department headquarters following the bell ringing on Sunday at 10 a.m.
