Bach Vespers

Grace Concert Choir and Orchestra will present Johann Sebastian Bach's Cantata 109, “Ich glaube, lieber Herr, hilf meinem Unglauben!” (I Believe, Dear Lord; Help My Unbelief!)

Conductor Carol Weber notes, “The counterpoint is extraordinarily beautiful, but the Cantata is not performed too often.  I couldn't resist the opportunity to present it.

Grace’s Pastor, the Reverend Dr. Clemens Reinke, enthused, “This is the perfect piece for this moment. Times are tough, and the weather is bad. We need to remember that we all struggle and that God is always faithful. Plus, we have top-notch musicians!”

As a bonus, this Bach Vespers will welcome back Soprano Kathryn Hennessy to sing “Heil und Segen, (Salvation and Blessing),” an aria from Bach’s Cantata 120.

Conductor Carol Weber said, “I always enjoy collaborating with our concertmaster, Lisa Derasse, and other local musicians.  For Cantata 109, our orchestra will be comprised of strings, 2 oboes, played by Sarah Davol of Teaneck, and Gary Hamme of Leonia, a corno da caccia (hunting horn) played by Teaneck resident, R. J. Kelley, and continuo organ -- 12 players in all.”

As always, Grace Concert Choir and Orchestra will present Bach’s Cantata in the context of a traditional Vespers service. The church provides bulletins to help everyone participate in hymns, prayers, and even bits of ancient chant as desired.
