Video Games And Modern Society

Speaker: Paulo Ribeiro

The home video game system is forty years old this year, and video games are a $70 billion a year industry.  Video games have moved from fad, to trend, to culture, and they have become a force of their own across the globe.  What are the factors that led to the rise of this phenomenon?  What does the modern "gamer" look like, and what are the issues of gender and race in gaming today?  What are possible consequences of playing video games, and where are they ultimately going?

Paulo Ribeiro is a member of the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County.  He holds a Bachelors Degree in Sociology from Montclair State University.  In addition to being an avid video game enthusiast, Paulo has also participated as an artist, programmer and contributor in video game development.
