Teaneck Man Charged In Fatal Hit-And-Run

TEANECK, NJ - A Teaneck man has turned himself into authorities weeks after he struck and killed another township resident in a hit-and-run crash on Christmas Day, authorities said.
Stalin Kappil, 62, turned himself into members of the Teaneck Police Department and the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Saturday afternoon, said Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir Grewal. He was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident.

Steven J. Leitgeb, 59, was killed after he was struck by a black Honda Pilot SUV while crossing the intersection of Cedar Lane and Garrison Avenue at 6:47 p.m. Christmas Day, Grewal previously said. Emergency responders found Leitgeb lying the roadway and transported him to Hackensack University Medical Center where he died as a result of his injuries, Grewal said.

Detectives investigated the incident and determined that a 2003 to 2005 black Honda Pilot SUV fled the scene following the incident, the acting prosecutor said.
Kappil was released from custody after posting $5,000 of his $50,000 bail, authorities said. He is due to appear in Teaneck Municipal Court Wednesday at 9:30 a.m.
