10K Without Power In N.J. After Powerful Storm Flips Trucks, Pounds Houses [VIDEO]

More than 10,000 were still without power Thursday morning after a crazy storm knocked over trees and wires and flipped vehicles overnight.

More than 10,000 were still without power Thursday morning after a crazy storm knocked down trees and power wires and flipped vehicles on their side during the overnight hours.

PSEG, JCP&L and Atlantic Electric said they hoped that most customers would have their power back by 4 p.m.

Some of the immediate impacts on the state include, according to 511nj.org:

  • Downed tree and downed wires on NJ 57 eastbound East of CR 637/Liberty Rd in Greenwich Twp. Right shoulder closed.
  • Downed tree and downed wires on US 9W in both directions at East Clinton Ave in Tenafly. All lanes closed and detoured.
  • Flooding on Shepard Avenue in both directions between Park Avenue and Beechwood Avenue in Middlesex. All lanes closed.
  • Flooding on River Road in both directions between Baekeland Avenue and Lincoln Boulevard in Middlesex. All lanes closed.
  • Accident and a vehicle off the roadway on the Garden State Parkway southbound Exit 30 - NJ 52/Laurel Drive in Somers Point. Partial ramp blocked.
  • Accident with property Damage on the I-78 Toll Bridge westbound at Pennsylvania Side - Toll Plaza in Easton. One toll lane closed for repair.

Here are some of the impacts of the storm:

  • The storm was damaging enough to deliver lightning strikes to New Jersey homes, including a Long Valley structure that was hit by a bolt, according to Washington Township Committeeman Matt Murello. Members of the Long Valley, Schooley’s Mountain, and Fairmount fire companies responded to the scene.
  • The thunderstorm last night caused waterways, such as the Pequannock River near, Wayne to rise to ’minor’ flood stage Thursday morning, the National Weather Service. The river, which is a tributary of the Passaic River, was at 5.55 feet high in Macopin at 9:30 a.m., with minor flooding occurring. The river is forecast to crest at 5.8 feet high.
  • A Morris County man was struck by a vehicle and killed Wednesday night in Morris Township during a heavy rainstorm, Capt. Richard Ferrone said.Police received a call at 7:58 p.m. of a collision involving a pedestrian in the area of Madison Avenue at Pitney Place, Ferrone said.
  • High winds caused a semi-trailer truck to flip over on the upper level of the George Washington Bridge Wednesday night, police said. Strong winds caused the 18-wheeler that was traveling east on the bridge to flip over into the westbound lanes. Here is a video of the incident:
