At least 16 people were killed, and others were seriously hurt, during what turned out to be a deadly Memorial Day weekend in New Jersey.

The incidents were certainly unusual as well, starting with a deadly plane crash in the Hudson River, the discovery of a body in Maplewood and a 19-year-old cowboy rider killed by a horse.

  • A vintage WWII era plane crashed into the Hudson River on Friday, killing the pilot onboard, authorities said. The NYPD confirmed that the body of the pilot was recovered from the sunken aircraft, a World War II-era P-47 Thunderbolt that went down about two miles south of the George Washington Bridge. The pilot was identified as William Gordon, 56, of Key West, Fla. Read more here..
  • A 101-year-old New Jersey war veteran and Pearl Harbor survivor died from injuries he suffered in a Memorial Day weekend car crash, city officials said. Read more here...
  • Authorities are investigating the discovery of a body found in Maplewood on Memorial Day morning. According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, Maplewood police officers responded to a report of a “person lying in the street” at the intersection of Wyoming Avenue and Hickory Drive around 4 a.m. Read more here..
  • A 19-year-old cowboy died after being stepped on by a horse at Cowtown Rodeo Saturday in Pilesgrove, according to rodeo officials. Coy Lutz of Howard, Pa was competing in the bareback bronc riding event when the tragedy occurred.
  • A motorcyclist died when his Harley Davidson slammed into a van near Exit 82 on the Garden State Parkway Saturday night, police said. The motorcyclist collided with the rear of a van driven by a teenager who was driving drunk, State Police said. The collision occurred at 8:37 p.m. Saturday on the southbound lanes of the Parkway near exit 82. Read more here...
  • Authorities are investigating a homicide that took place at a Newark gas station on Memorial Day. Police responded to a report of a shooting on the 400 block of West Market Street around 4:25 p.m. on Monday, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office. Read more here...
  • A 28-year-old Camden man was shot and killed Saturday afternoon in the city, according to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office. Camden County Police responded to the 1300 block of Browning Street after getting 9-1-1 calls and an alert from a gunfire detection system around 2:23 p.m., according to the CCPO. Read more here ...
  • A man was struck and killed in Absecon Saturday, according to the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office. Kyle Marcy, 26, of Galloway was struck around 4 a.m. at the intersection of Route 30 and Route 9, according to the ACPO. Read more here ...
  • A 54-year-old bicyclist was struck and killed in Folsom Saturday, police said. Kenneth Williamson of Williamstown was traveling north on Cains Mill Road at 8:57 p.m. when he was struck by a vehicle on Route 322, police said.
  • A 22-year-old Ewing woman was charged with vehicular homicide for allegedly striking and killing an 86-year-old man as he crossed the street in Fort Lee, according to the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office.

  • U.S. 40 Pilesgrove: Passenger Car Driver, May 29, 11:16 a.m.
  • Route 607, Mount Laurel: Passenger Car Driver, May 29, 3:17 p.m.
  • Clinton Road, West Milford: Passenger Car Driver, May 29, 9:29 p.m.
  • Route 577 at Hickory Drive, Maplewood: Pedestrian May 20, 3:55 a.m.
  • U.S. 202, Raritan: Pedestrian, May 31 4:54 a.m.

Also, a man got a near-fatal electric shock in a New Jersey pool this weekend and nearly drowned, police said.

The victim, who has been identified as Greg Subiszak, 34, of Fair Lawn, got the electric shock around 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Aztec Motel located on the 400 block of East Lavender Road in Wildwood Crest, according to police. Read more here...
