Resident Taken To Hospital, Pet Rescued In Toms River Fire

The Washington Street apartment fire remains under investigation.

TOMS RIVER, NJ — A resident was taken to the hospital and a pet was rescued Wednesday after a small fire broke out at a Washington Street apartment building, officials said.

Toms River Fire Companies 1 and 2 responded to the fire at 216 Washington St. that was reported about 5:15 p.m., police said.

Fire company officials said Rescue-Engine 2561 arrived and found smoke emanating from the involved apartment's door and additional firefighting units from both companies along with East Dover and Island Heights fire companies responded.

One person was taken to the hospital by Toms River EMS, and one pet was rescued from the apartment by department members, fire company officials said in a post on Facebook.

The incident remains under investigation by the Toms River Bureau of Fire Prevention.

Silverton and Pleasant Plains fire companies provided station coverage while crews fought the fire.
