Toms River Man Nabbed After Fleeing Police Stop

TOMS RIVER, NJ — A Toms River man who ran from police after his car was pulled over on Monday evening has been arrested, Toms River police said Wednesday.

Peter L. O'Neill, 53, was arrested in Riverwood Park on Tuesday evening, said Jillian Messina, media specialist for the Toms River Police Department.

Police tried to pull O'Neill over about 9:45 p.m. Monday after seeing an erratic driver headed west on Route 37 near Vaughn Avenue. The driver, later identified as O'Neill, tried to elude police before eventually pulling over and running, Messina said.

The Ocean County Sheriff’s Department and Island Heights Police Department assisted in searching for O'Neill but authorities could not find him on Monday night.

On Tuesday he was found at Riverwood Park and arrested, she said.

O'Neill has been charged with eluding, obstruction of law and failure to stop and is being held at the Ocean County Jail pending a detention hearing.
