WAYNE, NJ — Parents may begin applying the last week of March for Wayne's annual Junior Police Academy, an opportunity for children interested in law enforcement to get some hands-on experience with local officers.

Township Police are preparing for this year's Academy, which takes place at Wayne Valley High School from Monday, June 26-Thursday, June 29.

"Our objective is a week of education and fun through a Police Academy format," police said. "The curriculum will include various presentations from guest law enforcement agencies, hands-on practices and physical training to give the recruits an idea of what is involved with becoming a Police Officer."

Police recommend that children undergo a physical before starting the academy, to ensure they can participate in activities. Academy recruits must also follow a code of conduct, and be on time each day.

A graduation ceremony will follow the academy on Thursday, June 29 at 1 p.m. in the Wayne Valley High School auditorium.

Any questions about the Academy may be directed to Detective Ray Caronia (caroniar@waynetownship.com) or Detective Eugene Foster (fostere@waynetownship.com). Police ask that parents do not call the department to inquire about their child's application status.

"We are hopeful the interaction that will take place between your children and the members of our police department will have a positive effect on all involved," the department said. "As police officers, we thoroughly enjoy participating in this program each year and look forward to working with your children."
