Man Shot By Police In Deptford Told Officers He Had A Gun: Prosecutor

The man jumped out of a hotel window as he fled from police on Thanksgiving, authorities said. He was wounded in the shooting.

DEPTFORD, NJ — A man who jumped from a Deptford hotel window before getting wounded in a Thanksgiving police shooting has been identified.

Jeffrey Jaworski, 58, of Sewell, also told officers he had a gun as he ran away from law enforcement, the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office (GCPO) revealed on Friday.

Deptford police reported to the Fairfield Inn at about 1:30 p.m. Nov. 28, after hotel management told them Jaworski was acting aggressively. When officers arrived at Jaworski's hotel room, he opened the door but quickly slammed it shut, the GCPO said.

When Jaworski refused to open the door, police told him he was under arrest. Once management helped officers get into the room, they learned that Jaworski jumped out of the second-floor window and was running away.

Officers followed Jaworski into the woods near the hotel, where he told police he had a gun, the GCPO said. During the encounter, Deptford Police Sgt. David Grogan shot at Jaworski three times, hitting him once.

Jaworski then moved further into the woods, jumped over a chainlink fence and ran into traffic on Route 42 before he was arrested, police said.

Officials brought Jaworski to Cooper University Hospital in Camden, where his gunshot wound was treated. He was charged with being a fugitive from justice and possession of a controlled dangerous substance. The GCPO did not say which drug he's accused of possessing.

The state attorney general's office appointed the GCPO to spearhead the investigation, which is ongoing. Anyone with information can contact GCPO Det. Jordan Plitt at 856-384-5583 or email tips@co.gloucester.nj.us.
