Broken Watermain Break Repairs Continues, Route 82 Remains Closed In Union County

UNION COUNTY, NJ — Emergency repairs for a broken water main in Union continue causing Route 82/Morris Avenue to remain closed and detoured in both directions near the Lowes shopping center in Union Township on Thursday.

The water main broke around 7 a.m. Tuesday near the Route 22 overpass and the entrance to the Lowes shopping center in Union Township.

New Jersey American Water and its contractor are continuing to work on repairs. It is unclear at this time when work may be completed.

Route 82/Morris Avenue eastbound is closed at Burke Parkway and Route 82/Morris Avenue westbound is closed at Sayre Road. In addition, the ramp from Route 22 eastbound to Route 82/Morris Avenue eastbound is closed, and the ramp from Route 22 westbound to Ingersoll Terrace is closed.

The following detours will remain in place until further notice:

Route 82/Morris Avenue eastbound Detour:

• Motorists on Route 82/Morris Avenue eastbound will be directed to turn left onto Stuyvesant Avenue
• Turn right onto Vauxhall Road
• Turn right on Salem Road back to Route 82/Morris Avenue eastbound

Route 82/Morris Avenue westbound Detour:

• Motorists on Route 82/Morris Avenue westbound will be directed to turn right onto Salem Road
• Turn left onto Vauxhall Road
• Turn left onto Stuyvesant Avenue back to Route 82/Morris Avenue

Route 22 eastbound to Route 82/Morris Avenue eastbound Detour:

• Motorists on Route 22 eastbound wishing to take the ramp to Route 82/Morris Avenue eastbound will be directed to continue on Route 22 eastbound
• Take the ramp to Union/Elizabeth
• Turn left onto Vauxhall Road toward Elizabeth
• Turn right on Salem Road back to Route 82/Morris Avenue eastbound

Route 22 westbound to Ingersoll Terrace Detour:

• Motorists on Route 22 westbound wishing to take the ramp to Ingersoll Terrace will be directed to take the ramp to Union/Milburn, which is before the ramp to Ingersoll Terrace
• Turn right onto Vauxhall Road
• Turn left onto Stuyvesant Avenue back to Route 82/Morris Avenue
