Pedestrian Killed Trying to Cross All 3 Lanes Of Route 22 Friday Morning

Breaking: This death marks the fifth pedestrian fatality on Route 22 in five months and the second this week.

UNION, NJ — A Union man was killed Friday morning while trying to walk across Route 22. This death marks the fifth pedestrian fatality on this highway in five months and the second this week.

Edgard Cruz, 67, of Union was attempting to cross all three lanes of Route 22 East from the Point Condo’s to the Seven Eleven center island and was struck by a black 2015 Chrysler 200 driving in the left hand lane on Jan. 20 at around 9:26 a.m., Union Police reported.

Cruz sustained serious injuries and was transported to University Hospital in Newark, where he later died. The driver of the Chrysler remained on scene and was not injured and is currently cooperating with investigators, police reported.

The accident is being investigated by Officer Michael Cocca of the Union Police Department Fatal Accident Unit. Any persons that may have witnessed the crash or its immediate aftermath are asked to call the Union Police Department at (908) 851-5000.

A pedestrian from Hampton was killed earlier this week on Sunday night in Bridgewater.
