FBI Releases Crime Index Report for 2010

Information shows increase in car thefts in Westwood and violent crime in Washington Township

Across the country, the number of incidents of violent crime are dropping, but Washington Township saw a slight increase from 2009 to 2010, according to the 2010 Crime Index Report released by the FBI.

The township, with a population of 9,664, had five incidents of violent crime in 2010 compared with two in 2009. Incidents of rape and aggravated assault also increased in the township. There were no rapes in 2009 and two in 2010. There was one aggravated assault in 2009 and three in 2010.

Burglaries in the township were down, from 17 to eight, robberies went from one to zero and larcenies decreased from 22 in 2009 to 18 in 2010. There were no murders, motor vehicle thefts or arsons in Washington Township in either year, according to the data.

In Westwood, which has 10,739 people, the greatest increase between the two years came from motor vehicle thefts. The borough saw 12 in 2010 compared with just two in 2009.

Violent crime decreased in Westwood from 10 incidents in 2009 to six in 2010. Robberies, aggravated assaults and burglaries all decreased as well. Robberies went from two to zero, aggravated assaults went from eight to six, and burglaries went from 14 to 12.

Larcenies increased from 45 incidents in 2009 to 49 in 2010. There were no murders, rapes or arson reported in either year, according to the data.
