Sound Off on Single-Sex Classrooms

In our first ever "Sound Off", we’re discussing co-education schools, and whether there is a greater benefit to be had from single-sex classrooms or ones where boys and girls can learn together.

Several school districts across the country have been experimenting recently with single-sex classrooms, on the theory that it removes distractions and may better engage the different biological mechanisms boys and girls have for learning. Some critics contend that it is harmful to students, reinforcing negative gender stereotypes, while others like the ACLU are saying that it amounts to segregation and is unconstitutional. Other research suggests that it actually mitigates the effects of gender stereotypes and provides space for boys and girls to gravitate towards those topics and interests they enjoy most, instead of what is socially acceptable.
