The following Fencing report was submitted by Coach Paul Apostol:
Northern Highland’s record coming into this meet was 7-1, losing only to Don Bosco, compared to Ramapo’s 5-1 record against League Schools, so we anticipated a tough match.
As usual, our sabreists got us off to a strong start by sweeping all three of their bouts. Epee also did a good job with their 2-1 performance while foil struggled to a 1-3 result giving Ramapo a 6-3 record for the first round.

In the second round sabre had a rare loss for a 2-1 record, epee continued strong with a 2-1 record and foil bounced back to also deliver a 2-1 performance, which brought the second round score to 12-6, a comfortable enough lead for us to take out all the starters and send in our subs. The sabre subs won the first two bouts of the third round to clinch the meet at 14-10.
Overall team captain, senior Charles Copti, the team’s only undefeated fencer with a 20-0 record, found himself in the unusual position of having to struggle with an opponent in order to eke out a 5-4 victory in the first bout of the meet. Charles made up for the worry this caused the team and fans by beating his second opponent 5-0.

Squad captain, senior Josh Chang, who is right behind Charles with a 21-1 record, took no chances and aggressively defeated both his opponents 5-1.
Sophomore Alex Gorloff, not to be outdone also beat his first round opponent 5-1. Substitutes, senior Eric Yoon, and freshman Adam Carcione also produce a victory apiece to complete the sabre squad’s 7-2 record for the meet.
The epee squad continued to be a strong contributor to the team’s victories with a 7-2 record. A-strip fencer, junior Sam Judd led the squad with a 2-0 performance, decisively winning both bouts by 5-0. Sam has perfected his trademark toe touch, which he rarely misses.
Assisting Sam with one victory apiece were juniors Scott Zellers, Anthony Ferrer, and Anthony Sclafani, along with sophomore Michael Daly and freshman John Lim.
There was also a JV meet which was stopped at 12-12 because some of the JV fencers were going to be subbed into the Varsity meet. Sabreists Adam Carcione and Chris Muller produced two victories apiece while sabreists Taylor Valdez and Dan Carione contributed one victory apiece. Foilists Tim Lee, Nick Carpino, Dan H. Kim and Nick Bonini had one win apiece. Epeeists John Lim, Anthony Ferrer, Matt Martone and Matt Rizzo also produced 1-0 records.
Our next meet is is at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 2, at home against Indian Hills.
