Junior Football Squad Takes Home Big Prize

War Eagles top Kinnelon in league Super Bowl.

On November 20, the Franklin Lakes Junior War Eagles won the Tri-County Youth Football League’s (TCYFL) Super Bowl Championship with a thrilling 13-6 victory over the Kinnelon Colts.

The squad, comprised of 5th and 6th graders, gave head coach Pete Sacco his first championship in 13 years at the helm.

Franklin Lakes got on the board in the 2nd quarter on a 20-yard pass from QB Cameron Carti, who connected with Michael Graff. The play was set up on a long toss from Carti to Colin Boel.

Kinnelon knotted the game midway through the third, but it was all War Eagles from there, shutting down the Colts offense, and sealing the win with an impressive 4th quarter running attack featuring backs Michael Gallo and Blake Martino, who went in for the score.

Also of note was the outstanding play of the offensive line including, J.R. Woods and John Robinson.

During the regular season, the Franklin Lakes War Eagles ‘A’ team went 7-2 with 177 points scored and 52 points given up. In the post-season, the War Eagles went 2-0 with 20 points scored and 12 points given up, including victories over Northern Highlands in the playoffs and Kinnelon in the Super Bowl.

In addition, the Franklin Lakes ‘B’ team, which is a developmental program, went 7-0-1. That team was led by the outstanding play of QB/LB A.J. Wingfield, TB/DE Matt Wingfield, and HB/LB Jason Veliky.

Sacco’s overall regular season record is 69-28-1 with three Super Bowl appearances.
