OAKLAND, NJ — Ramapo Indian Hills Board of Education Vice President John Butto has resigned.
Butto, a member of the board since 2013, wasn't in attendance at a recent board meeting, but his letter of resignation was read by President Filomena Laforgia.
"It was with great sadness that I must inform you that I am announcing my retirement from the Ramapo Indian Hills school board," his letter began.

Butto added that it was never his intention to stay the entire year, but that his elongated stay was an effort in "clearing my name from a frivolous ethics complaint." No additional information was discussed about that complaint.
According to his letter, Butto also stayed on to assist Laforgia after she became board president, and to hire a new superintendent.

That latter goal was achieved, with the district approving the hire of Rui Dionisio in August. He will begin his tenure as superintendent beginning in November.
Butto listed a few other achievements during his tenure, including field upgrades, overseeing the hiring of five superintendents and offering fiscal and administrative support to teachers.
