Bergen Cancer Survivor, Dad Donate Start Business, $7K To Children's Cancer Institute

Rebecca Salmins and her father, Gerhard, started Knots And Arrows, a bracelet-making business, last year after she was declared cancer-free.

WYCKOFF, NJ — Rebecca Salmins never gave up hope. While she was going through all the intense treatments to cure her leukemia, she never lost hope. Now, she's made sure others like her don't either.

Salmins and her family will donate $7,000 Monday to Tackle Kids Cancer, a philanthropic program benefitting the Children's Cancer Institute at Hackensack University Medical Center. New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning is very involved with it and has formed a friendship with Salmins.

Salmins was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia when she was 6. She underwent 26 months of intense treatment at the institute.

Salmins was declared cancer-free in November 2016. That same month, she and her father Gerhard, who is also a cancer survivor, founded Knots And Arrows, an online bracelet and accessory business. The name comes from two inspirational quotes that encouraged Salmins while she was being treated.

"When you've reached the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on," said Sherry Salmins, Rebecca's mother. "And an arrow can be shot by dragging it backwards. So, when life seems to be dragging you back, it's getting ready to launch you into something great."

The business donates 10 percent of every sale to a childhood cancer charity and 10 percent to a family of a child who has been diagnosed with cancer.

Salmins and her family will present the $7,000 to the institute and the Hackensack University Medical Center Foundation Monday morning.
