Wyckoff Educator To Judge Local Poetry Contest

Dr. Mary Orr worked in the Wyckoff Public School District for 46 years, including 28 as principal of Abraham Lincoln Elementary School.

WYCKOFF, NJ — A longtime township educator will judge entries submitted for a Bergen County poetry contest.

Dr. Mary Orr will lead a panel of judges for the Joyce Kilmer Poetry Contest. Orr worked as an educator in Wyckoff for 46 years, including 28 as principal of Abraham Lincoln Elementary School. She retired two years ago.

Orr was named the Bergen County YMCA's Humanitarian of the Year. She was honored as the 2007 National Distinguished Principal in New Jersey by the National Association of Elementary School Principals.

“We are honored to have someone of such educational and civic accomplishment preside over the judging,” said Alex Michelini, president of the Joyce Kilmer Society of Mahwah.

The Joyce Kilmer Society works to further the knowledge of its namesake, who wrote "Trees" in his Mahwah home in 1913.

The contest is open to students and adults from throughout North Jersey. Four Best in Show entries will each receive $50 and six more will each receive $25.
