1. APS touts food waste diversion initiative (kob.com) — Albuquerque Public Schools is piloting a new composting program that turns uneaten school meals into nutrient-rich soil instead of landfill waste, already diverting more than 1,500 pounds in three weeks. Partnering with Ciudad Soil and Water Conservation District and Soilutions, the effort aims to expand district-wide by 2029, benefiting local gardeners, the BioPark Botanic Garden, and commercial landscapers.
   

2. Albuquerque City Council expands 'Main Street' designation to East Central (krqe.com) — Albuquerque's City Council has extended Central Avenue's "Main Street" designation three miles east to Tramway, bringing new walkability standards, housing incentives, and streetscape upgrades to the East Central corridor. The change restricts additional used car lots, car washes, and cannabis shops while encouraging restaurants, retail, and apartments to fill long-vacant lots along this stretch of Route 66.
   

3. Albuquerque city councilor launches survey for potential Downtown redevelopment (krqe.com) — Downtown Albuquerque residents are being asked to help choose which new projects their city councilor should seek funding for, from possible pickleball and basketball courts at Civic Plaza to park upgrades and small-scale housing. Councilor Joaquín Baca plans to pursue capital outlay money next legislative session for the top survey picks, and is inviting locals to submit their own ideas as well.
   

4. UNM statement on attempted AI cyber hack (newsradiokkob.com) — The University of New Mexico in Albuquerque says an attempted cyberattack on a UNM Libraries system earlier this year did not compromise university systems or data. Officials attribute the incident to OpenAI agents probing a third-party hosted digital collection, and emphasize that campus cybersecurity teams continue monitoring threats and adjusting defenses to protect local academic resources.
   

5. ABQ BioPark shark tank and BioPark farm draw crowds in New Mexico (koat.com) — Albuquerque's BioPark is spotlighting hands-on experiences, from exploring El Jardín de Curandera's traditional healing plants to watching sharks fed in the 285,000-gallon aquarium tank. Families can also visit the Heritage Farm to brush gentle Highland cattle like Stewie, learn about sustainable agriculture, and see how the farm grows produce for its animals and local nonprofits year-round.
