UPDATE: Fumes at West Babylon High Send More Than 3 Dozen to Hospital

A Major Response Emergency Vehicle was requested to the scene Tuesday afternoon.

WEST BABYLON, NY - More than three dozen people have been taken to the hospital following a 911 call reporting a gas leak at West Babylon High School, officials have told Patch.

Police received the call at 11:50 a.m. Tuesday. A police spokeswoman told Patch “some type of substance” caused fumes in the hallway of the school. It is unclear at this time what that substance was.

Suffolk County’s Major Response Emergency Vehicle was requested to the scene. A total of 40 people–36 students and four faculty members–were taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center, NBC reported.

“Everyone seems to be fine other than some minor dizziness and nausea, those types of symptoms,” hospital spokeswoman Theresa Jacobellis told the Daily News. “With the number of people affected, it’s definitely an unusual situation.”

The high school on Great East Neck Road was evacuated and students were dismissed at 12:30 p.m., according to a message on the West Babylon School District’s Facebook page.

Here’s the rest of the message from the district:

“An odor was detected in the hallway, students were evacuated and the fire department was called. We are unsure when we will get clearance to re-enter the building. Transportation will be bringing students who take a bus home and walkers will be released. Please do not attempt to pick up your child as much of Route 109 in front of the HS is blocked off. We will provide an update later today. If your child should experience any symptoms, please seek medical attention and notify the school nurse tomorrow.”
