Don't Let The Sun Set on Summer Just Yet

Summer officially ends Sept. 21, and if you’re like most everyone else, you’re astounded that the beach season is nearly over and you haven’t had as much fun as you had planned.

Seriously, who doesn’t want some amusing stories and an interesting answer to the question of “What you did do over the summer?” when you get back to school or that first day of work after Labor Day.

That’s where Patch comes in. We’re all about fun, having fun, stirring up fun. Heck, we support fun for everyone and thought you might want some help in making sure that the next 35 days don’t pass without some serious fun.

So with the spirit of Twitter trending topic today, #overthesummer, here are some fun suggestions, and even some serious ideas, that will make you the focus of attention at the water cooler or the school lunch table.

Look Like the Guy Who Always Gives Back

Take part in the beach clean-up event run by by jdella at Overlook Beach Thursday starting at 4 p.m. Bring a suit and take a dip after and watch the sunset with the sound of the ocean as your background music at least once this summer.

Test Your Digestive Track

Fast from eating on an upcoming Sunday and then stop in at the early Monday morning and eat a serving of every one of the gelato flavors that Sal has to offer or try at least five specialty coffees within a two-hour span. Just don’t make any plans to leave the Bean to go anywhere without a public rest room for the next several hours.

Attend A Concert Where You Don’t Know Any of the Bands

Expand your musical tastes by listening to groups you’ve never heard. A good option may be the upcoming Whitesnake with Tesla, Sebastian Bach, Lita Ford, and Firehouse concert happening August 24 at Jones Beach Theater at 5 p.m.

Make New Friends Out East

Take a day trip out east on any remaining Friday and visit the Montauk Lighthouse at sunset, or to watch surfers do their thing as the day ends. Make sure you leave between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. This way you can picnic on Sunrise Highway and eventually Montauk Highway after sundown with about 400 other east-end bound tourists who didn’t realize a road trip to the Hamptons after noon on Friday is actually a full day excursion.

Have Fun By Staying Right in Town

Enjoy your tax dollars at work by attending one of the remaining free concerts held Friday nights, starting at 8 p.m. right on Main Street at the Gazebo right across from Argyle Lake. If you can get there by walking you’ll be able to boast about enjoying the village minus the parking dilemma.

Picnic on a Bridge

Head to Robert Moses on any of the remaining five Saturdays and hit the parkway at about 10:30 a.m. and you’ll be able to say you actually picnicked on a bridge. You’ll meet lots of new friends also enjoying the scenic view as you all slowly make your way to the parking fields to discover they’re all full for the day.

Get Your Socks Dirty for a Good Cause

Share the story of how philanthropic a person you are by participating and supporting the Dirty Sock 10K Run, which kicks off at 8 a.m. on Aug. 21. The community event supports local food pantries.

Stick to Your Own Kind and Have a Blast

The beauty of Overlook Beach isn’t just the ocean and sand. It’s the fact that only town residents can enjoy the beach and a great event, the Town of Babylon Beach Blast, takes place Sunday, Aug. 28, starting at 3 p.m.

Get a Bit More Classy

So maybe you’re not a big fan of classical music but take a few hours and expand your mind and music appreciation by attending the Shenole Latimer Quartet that will perform live at at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8.

Search for Jaws and Other Hidden Creatures

Roll your pants up, kick off the flipflops and grab the sein net to discover what’s under the murky water at Oak Beach Park. It’s a tropical fish seining event on Sept. 17 at 4 p.m.
