Photo of the Day: Inventor's Corner

One hundred and ten years ago, cutting-edge technology was being put into practice for the first time on the corner of Virginia Avenue and Fire Island Avenue.

Although the actual building that Guglielmo Marconi used to transmit his wireless signals to ships at sea is now located in Rocky Point, the site where it all happened is marked with a historical sign explaining the location's significance.

The Rocky Point Historical Society unearthed a newspaper article that reported a cottage (then located on a farmhouse property) was leased to the Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company in 1902. The sign's historical sources are unknown.
