It didn’t look promising for the Cavs who went down early after two quick goals by the Cardinals, but they quickly rallied and went up 5-2 at halftime.

It was a back and forth, physical matchup with stout defending led by Tom Smith, Josh Gantt and freshman Connor Philips in the second half.

Eighth-grader Max Kesicki of Katonah led Harvey’s attack with three goals while senior Connor Wilson scored two goals and collected three assists. Javen Stepp-Davis, Mike DePass, Jovell Forsyth, and Jameson Scarsella each tallied a goal.

On Friday, April 24, Harvey team traveled to Danbury, Connecticut, and defeated league rival Wooster School, 11-2. Despite playing the game in the bitter cold with unexpected April snow showers and hail, the Cavaliers notched their first league win.

Harvey got off to a great start after DePass scored 10 seconds into the game after winning the face off, then Stepp-Davis scored two quick ones to put the Cavs up 3-0. The Cavs dominated the rest of the way on a high-powered offense led by Wilson with four goals and three assists, DePass with three goals and Javen Stepp-Davis with two goals and an assist.

Harvey looks to a return visit to The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, Saturday with hopes of picking up another win over a Division II team.

Harvey is now 3-3 on the season.

Harvey Girls Lacrosse Stays Perfect

Harvey’s girls varsity lacrosse team jumped out to a 3-0 lead against Storm King School Monday, April 27, and controlled the game the rest of the way, winning 12-3 on the road.

Harvey’s first three goals came off the stick of eighth-grader Sophia Scarsella. The Lady Cavs then scored four more times to take a 7-0 lead at halftime.

Harvey played like a well-oiled machine with excellent ball movement and working as one complete unit on defense.

A total of seven players collected goals. In addition to Scarsella, senior Aliya Mayers collected three, junior Melissa Shaw-Patino of Pound Ridge and freshman Sadie Albert of Katonah had two each. Albert also set a single game record by collecting five assists. Harvey also got single goals from two freshmen, South Salem’s Sydney Lunder and Katonah’s lyJulia Mallon and seventh-grader Abby Sirota, who scored her first varsity goal.

Coach Greg Janos liked the overall team effort, but was glad to see some younger players perform well. “I’m excited for the younger players who are getting a chance to play. It’s great to see them chipping in on the scoreboard.”

Harvey is now 5-0 overall, 4-0 in league competition.

Harvey Boys Tennis Goes to 7-0

Harvey continued its dominant season with another convincing victory on the hard courts Monday, April 27, when the three-time HVAL champs defeated Christian Heritage 6-3.

For the first time this year all six singles players won their matches. Not only did they come out victorious, but they dominated in their singles matches from start to finish. Alec Roslin, Tyler Levy, Zach Goligoski, Noah Kagan, Daniel Qiu and Jackson Hammerstein all played very well in tough, windy conditions.

Harvey coach Marty Bernstein likes how the team is coming together. “They are working very hard and it is showing on the courts and in our results,” said the coach.

Harvey Girls Lose Home Court Tennis Match

Harvey’s girls varsity tennis team lost 5-2 Monday, April 27, to visiting Christian Heritage at Katonah Memorial Park.

Harvey’s only two points came from victories by #3 singles player sophomore Hannah Paul and sophomore Tali Looney, the team’s #4 singles player.

Paul won her match 10-9 after a well fought match-game went to a tie breaker which she won 7-4. Looney also gained a point for Harvey when she defeated her opponent 10-8.

Though Harvey’s doubles teams were shut out, sophomores Sage Myers and Giana Yang gained their first win in an exhibition match with a score of 8-2.

The Lady Cavs travel Wednesday to play The Master’s School of Connecticut.

Freshman Tosses Diamond Gem for Harvey

Freshman Jake Reber of Katonah pitched a complete game shutout for the Harvey School’s varsity baseball team at home Monday, April 27, a 10-0 whitewashing of Storm King School.

Reber struck out nine in five innings while allowing only one walk. Junior Andrew Scherl got the Cavaliers on the board in the first inning with a clutch two-out, two- run single which scored Waccabuc’s Marshall Euchner and Jackson Roberts. Scherl’s hit would be followed by two walks from Pierce Steinberg and Cross River’s Marc Catanese who pulled off a double steal to put them both in scoring position. Junior Ryan Alpert of Pound Ridge came through with another two-out single to score both runners. Harvey would score three more times in the second and fifth innings to cap the scoring.

Scherl finished with three RBI. Euchner and Albert each had two hits and knocked in two runs, but the star of the game was Reber.

Harvey coach Mike Rubenfeld praised the mound effort of his freshman starter. “Jake pitched great. He threw strikes, was ahead of all the batters and changed speeds very well.”

Coach Rubenfeld sees good things ahead for Reber. “He throws very well for a freshman and is only going to get better,” said the coach.

Harvey, now 2-6, travels to Dobbs Ferry Tuesday to play The Masters School and then hosts South Kent Friday.

Harvey Baseball Falls to Master’s

Harvey’s varsity baseball team dropped a 6-1 decision to The Master’s School of Connecticut Saturday, April 25.

Harvey had men on base in every inning, but just could not get the clutch hit. The Cavaliers’ lone run came in the seventh inning, when a red-hot John Colangelo hit a double over the centerfielder’s head to score Austin Forman.

Harvey gave up six runs on only three hits. Four of the runs scored via the walk. Harvey also committed a few costly fielding errors.

Andrew Scherl pitched three innings, allowing four runs, only one of them earned. Theo Rattner pitched the final three innings and didn’t allow a hit, but allowed two runs to score, one earned.

Harvey Gets First Baseball Win

Harvey picked up its first victory of the season Friday, April 24, banging out a season 15 hits en route a 9-5 win over Wooster.

Senior John Colangelo had an outstanding game both on the mound and at the plate. He struggled early on this season with his command, but against Wooster he was able to go the complete game, striking out 13 and walking only three. Coach Mike Rubenfeld said Colangelo gave the team what it really needed after opening winless in its first five games. “John really stepped up and gave us a great game when we needed it,” said the coach.

Colangelo also had a big game at the plate, collecting five RBI, including a bases loaded double in the fourth inning to break the game open. Andrew Scherl also went 3-3 and had a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. Senior Marshall Euchner of Waccabuc chipped in with a nice game at the plate, going 3-4 with a double.

Softball Suffers First Loss

The Harvey school’s varsity softball team could muster only three hits in losing 19-7 to Convent of Sacred Heart Friday, April 24, in Greenwich, Connecticut.

The Lady Cavaliers actually had two leads early in the game before Sacred Heart tied it at 7-7 on a run in the third inning. The host team then exploded for 12 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to break the game open. When Harvey did not score in the top of the fifth, the game was called, handing the Lady Cavs their first loss of the season against one win.

Harvey starting pitcher Hana Cornell took the loss. Jasmine Brouwer had two of Harvey’s three hits and knocked in two runs. Lara Dimick also had two RBI.

Harvey Boys Get Comeback Rugby Win

A long trip north to Springfield, Massachusetts, Saturday, April 25, for Harvey’s boys rugby team almost went for naught, but the Cavaliers beat Wilbraham and Monson Academy 12-10 on a late score in the second half to stay perfect on the season at 4-0.

After falling behind early 3-0 to a Monson penalty kick, disaster struck in the 10th minute when Harvey’s top forward Jay Haendler was sent off with a red card for making what was ruled a dangerous tackle. Two minutes later Harvey was down another man when co-captain Joe O’Connell received a yellow card. With Haendler out for the remainder of the match, the Cavaliers found themselves two men down for the next 10 minutes while O’Connell sat out the penalty.

Having to play short-handed seemed to inspire the Cavaliers who quickly struck back with some good ball control and forward play by Peter Lombardo and Dillon Singleton. Outside center Ilan Gressel got the ball and sprinted 50 meters, beating four would be tacklers and touching down between the posts. Tom Gattuso added the conversion kick to give Harvey a 7-3 lead at the half.

The second half would see Harvey continue its trademark brick wall defense and relentless offensive attack in search of more points. The Cavaliers would fall behind briefly, however, when a blocked kick sent the ball bouncing right into the hands of a Monson player who was able to score a converted try from 10 meters out to put Harvey behind 10-7.

Relentless pressure by Harvey standouts Reed Feldman, Matt LoBosco, and Dajour Fisher resulted in a penalty at the Monsoon 5-meter line where Coach Luigi Loiola had a tough decision to make with only about 10 minutes left in the game, to kick for the tie or go for the win. The coach went for the win. Sophomore Dylan Vitello received the ball from scrumhalf Cohen who beat three defenders and muscled his way in to give Harvey a hard fought 12-10 victory.

Coach Loiola was glad he trusted his team to score on the play. “I have the utmost confidence in my boys, so without hesitation I knew we would go for the win,” he said.

Boys B-Side Team Wins, Too

Meanwhile, the B-Side game saw Harvey’s younger and less experienced players win impressively, defeating Wilbraham and Monson’s B-Side team 34-22.

Harvey ran in six trys, two by Owen Cahan and one each by Sam Kelley, Jake Rogers, Taj Wahid and eighth-grader Oliver Davies. Captain Jarrod Waner of South Salem converted two trys in helping his team to the win.

Coach Loiola gave some credit to his assistant Mike Leone. “Coach Leone had the young guys ready to play, showing that after a good week of training, they were a much-improved side,” said coach Loiola.

B-Side forwards Mike Wilson and Mark Dokaj led the Harvey charge with prop Dokaj breaking through the Monson defense several times and Wilson seeming to be all over the pitch, setting up two trys and continually winning the ball for Harvey.

While sophomore Jake Rogers was the B-Side “Man of the Match,” Coach Loiola describes what he called the play of the game: “With Harvey behind and Monson on the march, their big Number 8 forward made a break and beat our defense down the right sideline. It looked like he would go in for the try, but freshman Justin Tebbutt, showing no fear and incredible pace, ran down the man twice his size and took him down from behind.”

Although Monson would soon score again, Coach Loiola described this as the play that inspired Tebbutt’s teammates and rallied them to a big win.
