Grand Avenue Teacher Earns State Award

Bellmore-Merrick's science teacher Kenneth Abbot wins STANYS 2014 Excellence in Teaching Award for the Intermediate Level.

The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District recently recognized one of its own at the district’s Dec. 3 board of education meeting when they honored Grand Avenue Middle School science teacher Kenneth Abbot.

Abbot was recently awarded the very prestigious Science Teachers Association of New York State (STANYS), 2014 Excellence in Teaching Award for the Intermediate Level.

Abbot was presented with the award at the 119th Annual STANYS Conference in Rochester, NY on Nov. 3.

Abbott has filled several different roles in the Bellmore-Merrick CHSD during his 24-year tenure. At Grand Avenue, he is the veteran Regents Earth Science teacher and is a true leader in the department. Abbott has also coached numerous sports and taken on a host of responsibilities, including his role as the Honor Society Advisor. He was the first recipient of the District’s Ann Crowley Award for Excellence in Professional Development. He has served as an earth science subject area representative for the Long Island region and also serves as the vice president of the New York State Earth Science Teachers Association.
