Brooklyn Drivers Kill 2 Pedestrians, 1 Cyclist In 3 Separate Crashes Monday

An 85-year-old man, a 69-year-old man and a 43-year-old man were killed in various parts of the borough within a five-hour time frame.

BROOKLYN, NY — Three men were fatally struck by cars in three separate incidents in Brooklyn Monday, police told Patch. An 85-year-old man, a 69-year-old man and a 43-year-old man were killed in various parts of the borough within a five-hour time frame.

The first accident was a hit-and-run in the vicinity of 584 Grand St. in Williamsburg, police said. Rafael Nieves, 85, of Brooklyn was fatally struck by an unidentified driver as he crossed Grand Street from north to south at about 1:06 p.m., police told Patch. The driver was traveling westbound on Grand Street in an unidentified white/brown box truck and continued driving after hitting Nieves. There are no arrests at this time and the investigation is ongoing, police told Patch.

At about 4:45 p.m., 69-year-old Iosif Plazinskiy of Brooklyn was biking when he was struck by a delivery truck on Avenue X near Coney Island Avenue, police said. Plazinskiy was traveling eastbound on Avenue X in an area with no designated bike lane when he attempted to overtake a 2007 UD Delivery Truck traveling on the right side, police said. The driver, a 50-year-old male, tried to pull to the right and struck Plazinskiy, causing him to lose his balance and fall to the roadway. Plazinskiy was then struck again by the right rear tires of the truck, police told Patch. EMS brought Plazinskiy to Coney Island Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased, police said. There are no arrests and the investigation remains ongoing.

Marlon Palacious, 43, of Brooklyn was killed at Avenue A and Linden Boulevard in East Flatbush at around 5:21 p.m. Monday, police said. Palacious was walking across the street from the southeast side of Avenue A to the northwest side when he was struck by a 40-year-old male driving a 2004 Nissan Pathfinder. Investigation determined that the driver struck two vehicles before he hit Palacious. The driver then hit Palacious, continued down the street and struck three more cars before he stopped, police said. Palacious was pronounced dead at the scene, police told Patch. The investigation remains ongoing and no arrests have been made.
