Brooklyn Farebeater Who Cops Shot Pleads Not Guilty From Hospital Bed

BROOKLYN, NY — Derrell Mickles, the man police say they shot on the subway platform Sunday after he evaded the fare and threatened officers with a knife, pleaded not guilty to all of the criminal charges against him on Friday.

The charges include first-degree assault, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, menacing, and theft of service for not paying the subway fare, the Brooklyn District Attorney said.

Mickles, 37, was arraigned virtually from his hospital bed, a spokesperson for the DA said.

In addition to Mickles, two bystanders and one police officer were also shot during the chaotic incident on Sunday. Since then, one of the bystanders has been diagnosed with brain damage from the bullet.

Mickles was ordered to be held on a $200,000 cash bail or a $1.5 million bond.

His next court date is on Nov. 20, a spokesperson for the DA said.
