After Vietnam and Cancer, Lewiston Veteran Devotes His Life to Helping Others

Norman Machelor, 80, a Vietnam War veteran and Lewiston resident, is using his decades of experience to help western New York veterans secure the benefits they have earned.

As a Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Accredited Veterans Service Officer, Machelor works directly with veterans and their families, often maintaining relationships for years as conditions change or worsen.

His work has resulted in significant outcomes, including securing $80,000 in back pay for one veteran and helping Vietnam-era veterans ensure their spouses will be eligible for survivor benefits.

When asked how doing this work makes him feel, Machelor said, “Well, I had cancer. And when you battle cancer successfully, you ring a bell. So, a lot of days after I get home, I say to my wife, ‘I rang the bell’ because I was able to change someone’s life.”
