P/NW BOCES Anti-bullying Seminar Teaches Kids to Speak Up

Yorktown Heights — "One out of four kids are bullied each month," according to a video written and produced by Tech Center student Brian Schwenk. Brian, a student in the Auto-Computer Aided Design program, presented his well-researched and documented video to Tech students as part of an anti-bullying seminar held this week on the campus of Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES.

Brian, a Carmel High School student who also screened his video for freshman at his home school, told Tech students, "If you know someone is being bullied, help them by speaking out!"

New York State trooper Officer Tom Lebretti also gave students a pep talk on standing up for their friends. "No one is going to think you're a snitch," he said, adding that in the past some bullying victims have been driven to suicide. "There are laws against bullying," Officer Lebretti said. "Bullying is harassment."

To show their support of zero tolerance for bullying, Tech Center students made a graffiti mural where they wrote things like "Speak up!" and "Be proactive—do something to help!" As one student put it after the seminar, "If you can do something to help, you should do it."
