On The Ballot: Renovating Mount Kisco's Firehouses

The village's three buildings haven't been renovated in 30 years.

Mount Kisco officials want residents to approve a $10.25 million referendum to fund renovations at the village volunteer fire department’s three firehouses. Work would be done at the Independent Fire Company firehouse on Lexington Avenue, Mutual Engine & Hose firehouse on East Main Street and the Fire Rescue Police and Union Hook & Ladder Company facilities on Green Street.

The firehouses need to be upgraded to comply with the Americans With Disabilities Act. They're too small for modern equipment. And they weren't built with decent facilities for female emergency responders, according to The Examiner.

A public forum about the project drew questions about the possibility of building one big firehouse somewhere in town, The Examiner reported. Fire Commissioners and village officials said that had been considered but rejected because of the expense and the lack of a suitable piece of property.
