Calorie Counting vs. Fasting? Neither, Says Medical Expert; The Answer is In Your Hormones

Newest Member of NY Health & Wellness Team Weighs In on New Weight-Loss Study

Harrison, N.Y. – A new weight loss study comparing calorie counting to alternate-day fasting has been making headlines – but Dr. Siobhan Kealy, the newest physician on the clinical team at NY Health & Wellness, says neither is a viable long-term solution. Dr. Kealy is Medical Director for NY Health & Wellness and Co-creator of Balance 3H Plus® Metabolic Breakthrough Weight Loss program for women.

The study results, published this month in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, looked encouraging on the surface, with participants in both groups showing modest weight loss. But Dr. Kealy says the program’s dropout rates – 29 percent for the calorie restrictors and 38 percent for the fasters – tell a predictable story with an unhappy ending. There’s a better way, she says.

“While it’s true that reducing calories can lead to temporary weight loss, these diet methods, like most others, fail to account for the underlying biology that causes the excess weight in the first place,” Dr. Kealy says.

Specifically, three key hormones – ghrelin, lectin and cortisol -- are responsible for the regulation of metabolism, appetite and food cravings. “If those three hormones are out of balance, long-term weight-loss success is nearly impossible,” says Dr. Kealy, a board-certified physician with a background in endocrinology.

“That’s why I am excited to be a part of the team that developed Balance 3-H, a wellness plan that combines good nutrition, targeted exercise and supplements specifically designed to correct the hormonal imbalance that causes weight gain,” Dr. Kealy says.
