THE SANCTUARY SERIES CELEBRATES MOTHER’S DAY WITH RACHMANINOFF

Celebrate Mother’s Day with Sergei Rachmaninoff as The Sanctuary Series concludes its inaugural spring season on Sunday afternoon with a concert entitled “The Bells of Moscow” featuring piano works by the great Russian composer, including nine Etudes and Sonata No. 2 in B-flat minor, Op. 36, performed by the internationally acclaimed pianist, Alexandre Moutouzkine.

Mr. Moutouzkine is the top prize winner of the Naumburg, New Orleans, Cleveland, Montréal and Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Competitions. He tours in the US and internationally, and is a professor of music in New York City.

The Etudes-Tableaux and Sonata No.2 were written at the height of Rachmaninoff’s career as a composer, and are filled with references to the bells and chorales of the Russian Church. A few years later, the 1917 Russian Revolution would force Rachmaninoff to flee, which meant the end of Russia as he had known it.
