Police ID 3-Year-Old Boy Struck By Landscaping Truck In Deer Park

The boy ran into traffic Wednesday afternoon, police say.

DEER PARK, NY – Police have identified the 3-year-old boy who was hit by a landscaping truck when he darted out onto Deer Park Avenue in Deer Park Wednesday afternoon.

According to Suffolk Police, Bessy Pineda was on the sidewalk on the northbound side of Deer Park Avenue when her 3-year-old son, Marco Hernandez-Pineda, pulled away from her and ran into oncoming traffic near the intersection of Grand Boulevard around noon.

The child was struck by a northbound 2014 Ford commercial landscaping truck that was traveling in the right lane. The driver of the truck, Jose Flores, stopped immediately and remained at the scene.

A passerby transported Pineda and her son to Stat-Health, located at 1930 Deer Park Ave. A nurse at that location called 911 and Deer Park Fire Department Rescue transported Hernandez-Pineda to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip. The boy was later transferred to Stony Brook University Hospital where he is in serious condition.

Flores, 39, of Bay Shore, and four passengers in the truck were not injured.

An officer from the Suffolk Police Motor Carrier Safety Section responded to the scene and conducted a safety check on the vehicle. The investigation is continuing.
