Farrell was a passionate animal advocate who spent years helping homeless four-legged friends, and a beloved children's librarian. She fought her greatest battle against lung cancer, and from the first, friends rallied to help.
A GoFundMe created by Tanya Poole of Riverhead, "In Memory Of Sue Farrell," has raised $27,132 so far.
"Many of you know the sweet, compassionate, energetic Sue Farrell from her devoted work through SAVES Inc. or as the beloved children's librarian at the John Jermain Memorial Library in Sag Harbor, or by her love and compassion as a devoted mother of two teenage children who attend the Riverhead School District," Poole wrote, before Farrell's death.
Farrell, Poole said, had a "joyous personality" and knew how to bring a smile to everyone's face.
She was diagnosed with an extremely aggressive form of lung cancer, and, in a matter of one month, went from spending time with her family, to setting up activities with children at the library and saving hundreds of abandoned and stray cats, to being housebound, connected to oxygen.
Her loss echoed across the East End, with family and friends coming together to help the loved ones she left behind.
