EAST HAMPTON, NY — As temperatures spike this weekend, East Hampton Town’s Emergency Preparedness Coordinator Bruce Bates said he has been tracking projected temperatures closely and coordinating with town staff in case actions must be taken to protect residents’ health and safety.

"At present National Weather Service forecasts for East Hampton predict a high of 88 degrees on Saturday and a high of 89 degrees on Sunday, with moderate winds on both days," Bates said Friday. "While other areas in metropolitan New York and Long Island may be subject to triple-digit temperatures, it appears that East Hampton, due to our geographic location and other factors, may not get hit with such heat."

Bates, in conjunction with other town staff, including the town's human services director Diane Patrizio and safety officer Ed Michels will continue to monitor the situation, town officials said

If temperatures climb to dangerous levels the town will work with its cooperating agencies, such as local churches, to open designated cooling centers.

If that occurs, the public will be notified through postings on the town’s website, Town of East Hampton's Facebook page, as well as through local media such as the radio station WLNG 92.1FM and East Hampton’s cable provider LTV on channels 20 and 22, town officials said.
