Montauk Man Caught Speeding Drunk, Head-On Into Opposite Lane: Police

The man also had no headlights or tail lights on his vehicle, police said.

MONTAUK, NY - A Montauk man was busted after he was caught speeding drunk with no headlights or tail lights — and heading the wrong way into the opposite lane, police said.

According to East Hampton Town Police, Jeremiah T. Desmond, 66, was arrested on April 12 at 3:22 a.m. at the intersection of Edgemere Road and South Erie Avenue in Montauk.

Police said Desmond was driving a 2014 Acura north on Edgemere Road with no head lamps or tail lights illuminated. He was observed driving over the pavement markings into the opposite lane of travel at 60 miles per hour in a posted 40 mile per hour zone, police said.

Upon interviewing Desmond at the intersection of Industrial Road, police said he had "a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage" on his breath, bloodshot, glassy eyes, slurred speech, and was unsteady on his feet. He performed poorly on all standardized field sobriety tests administered, police said.

Desmond was charged with operating a motor vehicle with .08 of 1 percent alcohol or more in the blood, first offense, a misdemeanor, police said.

He was arraigned and released on his own recognizance, police said.
