Road Work Kicks Off on Route 114 in East Hampton This Week

The closures are needed to resurface a deteriorated section of NY Route 114, part of a $11.6 million state project.

EAST HAMPTON, NY — Repaving has kicked off on Route 114 in East Hampton.

Motorists are advised that off-peak midday construction operations began Tuesday to repair roadway drains and repave about two miles between New York State Route 27/Montauk Highway and Stephen Hands Path in East Hampton, a release said.

Weather permitting, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Route 114 travel lanes will be shifted or closed Monday through Friday as needed for various construction operations.

At least one eastbound and one westbound travel lane will remain open wherever possible during the midday construction operations. Intermittent brief closures of all lanes may also be utilized to accommodate positioning of construction equipment, the release said.

If the roadway is too narrow to safely accommodate two travel lanes, alternating directional traffic will be in effect for a short distance where eastbound traffic is stopped briefly while westbound proceeds, then vice versa.

If necessary night construction work will take place between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. in non-residential sections. To further minimize the impact of construction operations on motorists, residents and businesses, paving operations will be performed and substantially completed on shorter segments of NY Route 114 rather than disrupting the entire two-mile project length.

The closures are needed to resurface this deteriorated section of NY Route 114 which is part of the $11.6 million NYS Department of Transportation project to repair Long Island’s heavily traveled roadways and improve the safety of motorists, the release said.

During the mill and fill operation, the top layer of the damaged pavement will be removed then replaced with new asphalt. Traffic signal vehicle detector loops will be replaced and fresh pavement markings will be installed. Drainage cleaning and repairs will also be performed prior to the repaving operations. When completed, this resurfacing project will improve motorists’ safety and restore the integrity of that section Route 114.

Motorists are being warned in advance of the construction work via electronic road signs and should use alternate routes or they may experience travel delays. Drivers who must use this construction route are reminded to drive carefully through the work zone for their safety as well as the safety of the highway work crew. As with most road work, the operation is weather dependent and may be canceled, postponed, or prolonged due to inclement weather. Emergency service providers and local officials have been notified of these construction operations.
