UPDATE: Montauk Woman Dies After Crash Near Transfer Station: Police

MONTAUK, NY — Update: A Montauk woman was killed in a two vehicle accident involving a gas truck near the transfer station Tuesday, police said.

Police have identified the woman who died as Janis Hewitt, 63, authorities said.

According to East Hampton Town Police, David T. Kelleher, 42, of Mastic, was driving a 2015 International Harvester gas truck west on Route 27 when a 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser, driven by Hewitt and heading east, crossed into the westbound lane, colliding with the gas truck.

Hewitt was pronounced dead at the scene by investigators from the Suffolk County Medical Examiners Office, police said.

Kelleher was taken by ambulance to Southampton Hospital, where he was treated and released after being examined in the emergency room, police said.

Officers from the Suffolk County Police Motor Carrier Section responded and conducted safety checks on the International gas truck, police said. The 2005 Chrysler was impounded by East Hampton Town Police for a safety inspection, police said.

According to East Hampton Town Police, the accident took place at approximately 12:40 p.m.

East Hampton Town Police Chief Michael Sarlo said Montauk Highway was closed "from Old Highway west end to Lincoln Road while police and emergency crews investigate a serious accident involving a propane truck."

Police were unable to confirm injuries but a scanner alert indicated that the accident may have been head-on, with entrapment.
